The Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) has provided information for lift owners or persons responsible for lifts which clarifies the position on LOLER Thorough Examinations during the current Covid-19 pandemic.
In effect, the rules remain the same. There is no grace period and LOLER Thorough Examinations must be conducted on or before the expiry date of the last report. Currently there are no plans for any exemptions with regard to LOLERs. The full email content from LEEA is shown below.
In summary, if you do not have in-date LOLER certification for your lift, you must shut your lift down. It must not be used until it has a valid LOLER certificate.
Lift LOLER & Car MOT
We tend to use the analogy of a car MOT. To drive your car legally, it must have a valid, in-date MOT. In the same way, your lift must have an in-date LOLER certificate. Even if your LOLER certificate is only a day out of date, allowing the lift to be used would be illegal.
What to do if your business is shut?
If you’ve closed your business due to the Covid-19 government advice and your lift is due it’s LOLER Thorough Examination during the period of closure, contact us.
We’ll organise for your lift to have its LOLER inspection at an agreed time. Our LOLER inspections are booked in advance so you will know when our engineer is due and can arrange to be on site to let them in. We may even be able to organise contactless access, if you let us know in advance.
Our primary concern is to ensure that when your business re-opens, your lift will be able to resume work also.
Continued Lift Maintenance
We strongly advise you to continue with your standard lift maintenance programme to keep your lift in good working order.
If required, our maintenance engineers can let you know before they arrive on site so that you can cordon off the area prior to our arrival. Our engineers wear gloves and ensure push buttons are cleaned before they leave.
Social Distancing – Signage
If you require social distancing signs for your lift, our engineers are able to supply and fit for you. Our Covid-19 Safety Signs page give more details.
